Al-Midhatiya District in Babil Governorate has welcomed a newly operational flour mill owned by Etihad Company, with an annual production capacity of one million tons of fine flour. The facility was completed just eleven months after the foundation stone was laid and currently supplies nearly 50 percent of the local market’s flour demand.
Previously, Iraq relied heavily on imports valued at over 750 million U.S. dollars annually to meet its flour needs. The opening of this mill marks a significant reduction in this dependence, contributing to enhanced food security and the stabilisation of flour prices in the domestic market.
The mill produces a diverse range of high-quality flour products, which support both local consumption and industrial growth. This development is part of broader government efforts to increase national industry and empower the private sector, recognising their vital role in economic progress.
Babil Province is also nearing official designation as a major industrial city, with over 2,000 operational factories across multiple sectors. The province’s industrial expansion underscores Iraq’s commitment to strengthening its manufacturing base and reducing reliance on imports.
