Wood, the global engineering and consultancy firm, has secured a significant contract to provide project management and engineering services for PetroChina at the West Qurna 1 oilfield in southern Iraq. The deal marks a deepening of Wood’s long-term involvement in one of the world’s largest oilfields.
Under the contract, Wood will manage engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects for the field, leveraging its global capabilities and local workforce.About 200 Wood employees based in Iraq and the UAE will be working on the project.
West Qurna 1, located roughly 50 km northwest of Basra, holds more than 20 billion barrels of recoverable oil reserves. Wood’s President of Operations for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Ellis Renforth, said the field is “a cornerstone of Iraq’s energy infrastructure” and that the award reflects the trust PetroChina continues to place in Wood.
The contract underscores Wood’s long-standing commitment to Iraq’s energy sector. The company first began working at West Qurna 1 over a decade ago, helping to build and maintain critical infrastructure.
This agreement is also part of Iraq’s broader strategy to boost energy production and infrastructure. As demand grows, having engineering partners with local and international experience is essential for maintaining and expanding capacity in large oilfields like West Qurna 1.
