On July 2, 2024, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Government of Iraq signed a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the 2024 Population and Housing Census of Iraq. The agreement was formalised by Dr. Muhammad Ali Tamim, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning for Iraq, and Mr. Nestor Owomuhangi, UNFPA Representative in Iraq.
This MoU signifies a strengthened partnership aimed at improving population data collection for informed development planning. Dr. Tamim emphasised, “This memorandum reflects our commitment to working with UNFPA to address population issues and advance sustainable development in Iraq.”
UNFPA’s involvement ensures comprehensive support for the census, which will be conducted electronically for the first time. Mr. Owomuhangi expressed gratitude for the Iraqi government’s trust and financial backing, highlighting the importance of this support for accurate and credible census results.
Dr. Dhiaa Khadum, President of Iraq’s Authority of Statistics and Geographic Information Systems, stressed that the renewed agreement builds on previous commitments, ensuring the census benefits from international expertise and support. The collaboration will mobilise resources from global development partners, enhancing the accuracy of demographic data crucial for effective policymaking and promoting inclusive growth.
