UNESCO Boosts Teacher Development Across Iraq

UNESCO has expanded teacher development efforts in Iraq through the EU funded ITALEEM Programme, training 56 Master Trainers from 17 governorates in formative assessment, a key competency for general education teachers. The three day training, held in Erbil from 7 to 9 December 2025, was delivered in cooperation with the Ministry of Education of Iraq and the Ministry of Education in the Kurdistan Region.

These Master Trainers will soon train more than 2,000 teachers nationwide, providing them with practical skills to apply formative assessment techniques, promote interactive student-centred learning, identify early learning gaps, and improve classroom outcomes.

This step marks a significant move toward institutionalizing sustainable, system-wide professional development for teachers, supported by the European Union Delegation to Iraq, EU International Partnerships, UNESCO’s Representation to the European Institutions, and the Iraqi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science.
