UNESCO and Partners Protect Mental Health of Iraqi Journalists

In partnership with UNESCO, the Digital Reporting Platform for Women Journalists and the Iraqi Judiciary has launched a specialised training programme to improve mental health support for women journalists across Iraq. The initiative integrates artificial intelligence into its assessment methods, helping to identify symptoms of post-traumatic stress, psychological pressure, and work-related stress among participants.

These efforts are part of UNESCO’s ongoing work in Iraq, with experts offering professional assistance to women journalists and social media influencers who face emotional strain in, often, hostile environments.

The 2-day course, consisting of more than 20 women journalists participating, featured intensive sessions of psychological safety, stress management techniques, and burnout prevention.

Working alongside the European Union in Iraq, the Iraqi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, and UNAMI, UNESCO continues to help women journalists pursue their work with confidence and safety.
