After more than two decades supporting Iraq, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) is concluding its mandate at the end of this year.
Mr Mohammed Al-Hassan, briefing on the mission’s closure, thanked the Government of Iraq for hosting UNAMI and for its long-standing cooperation. “Today is a great day in which the international community witnesses a dignified and honourable conclusion to a UN mission,” he said.
He added that the closure “does not mark the end of our partnership with Iraq, but the beginning of a new chapter rooted in Iraq’s leadership of its future.”
The briefing highlighted Iraq’s achievements since UNAMI’s establishment, including the adoption of a new constitution and the successful conduct of national elections. Mr Al-Hassan noted, “I congratulate the Iraqi people and the Independent High Electoral Commission for a well-organised and credible process,” expressing confidence that Iraq will continue to build on these foundations.
Looking ahead, Mr Al-Hassan reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to continue supporting Iraq through technical expertise, advice, and programme support. “The United Nations will continue to stand by Iraq, helping to build an inclusive, secure, and prosperous future,” he said.
The closure of UNAMI marks the end of its operational mandate while reinforcing the ongoing partnership between Iraq and the United Nations.
