The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Dr Mohamed Al Hassan, visited Karbala Governorate on the 7th of July, where he met with the Governor, H.E. Mr Nsayif Jassim Al-Khatabi.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed a range of issues, including development priorities in the governorate and opportunities for support from the United Nations through its specialised agencies. Dr Al Hassan commended the progress made in Karbala and highlighted the governorate’s growing significance at the national level.
In a press conference following the meeting, Dr Al Hassan reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting development and the improvement of public services across Iraq, including in the promising governorate of Karbala. He also emphasised the importance of continued cooperation between the Government of Iraq and the United Nations.
The Special Representative expressed confidence in Iraq’s potential to move forward on its development path, citing the country’s rich human and scientific potential, both at home and abroad.
Earlier today, Dr Al Hassan also met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, to discuss recent developments in the relationship between UNAMI and Iraq.
A key focus of the meeting was the upcoming parliamentary elections, with both parties emphasising the importance of ensuring a fair, transparent, and inclusive electoral process.
