Switzerland Reopens Embassy in Baghdad After 30 Years

Baghdad has officially welcomed the return of Swiss diplomatic presence after more than three decades, as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein and Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis inaugurated the Swiss Embassy in Baghdad

The reopening ceremony, attended by senior officials from Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a Swiss delegation, marks a significant milestone in the revitalisation of relations between the two nations. It further reflects growing international confidence in Iraq’s improved security climate, political stability, and regional role.

Speaking during the ceremony, Minister Hussein said the return of the Swiss Embassy stands as a clear indicator of trust from the global community and will contribute to strengthening diplomatic, political, and economic partnerships. He added that the move creates a broader gateway for Swiss investment, enabling greater private-sector engagement and cooperation across key sectors of the Iraqi economy.

Foreign Minister Cassis expressed his government’s enthusiasm for restoring a full diplomatic presence in Baghdad. He emphasised that Switzerland views Iraq as a promising partner in the Middle East, with growing potential to support stability and economic development throughout the region. The reopening, he said, demonstrates shared commitment to revitalising bilateral cooperation in areas including trade, economic reform, cultural exchange, and regional peace initiatives.

The Swiss Embassy, which had remained closed for 30 years due to security conditions, now positions both nations to accelerate diplomatic momentum and deepen their collaboration going forward.
