ShaMaran Petroleum Corp. has confirmed that production at the Atrush and Sarsang oil fields in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq has been temporarily shut in as a precautionary measure due to deteriorating regional security conditions. The company said it was informed by HKN Energy Ltd., the operator of both fields, that output has been halted amid escalating tensions, and that ShaMaran’s assets and personnel have not been impacted.
In a similar move, Gulf Keystone Petroleum Ltd. (GKP) also announced a temporary shut‑in of production at its Shaikan field in northern Iraq’s Kurdistan Region. The London‑listed independent oil producer said it had taken the step to protect staff and operations given the evolving security situation, and that its assets have not been affected.
The precautionary suspension of output at these fields follows a broader pattern of energy infrastructure operators in the region curbing activity amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
Both ShaMaran and Gulf Keystone have emphasised that they are monitoring the situation closely and will resume operations when conditions allow, underscoring the ongoing uncertainties faced by the oil sector in the region.
