In a significant gesture of national pride, Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met with Najla Imad, the Iraqi athlete who secured a gold medal in table tennis at the Paris Paralympics. Accompanied by her father and coach, Jamal Jalal, the meeting was also attended by the Prime Minister’s Advisor for Women’s Affairs.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Al-Sudani extended his heartfelt congratulations to Najla for her extraordinary accomplishment, which not only marks a historic milestone for Iraq but also carries a profound humanitarian message. Overcoming numerous challenges, including the adversities of terrorism, Najla’s unwavering dedication and rigorous training have earned her the distinction of being the first Iraqi woman to secure a gold medal in an international competition.
The Prime Minister expressed profound appreciation for the support provided by Najla’s father and coach, recognising their pivotal role in her success. He underscored the significance of this achievement for the Iraqi people and announced that Najla would be honoured at the upcoming session of the Higher Council for Women. This honour is intended to acknowledge her achievements and ensure that she, along with other prominent athletes, receives continued support for their future endeavours.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to sports, Prime Minister Al-Sudani reaffirmed that sports development is a key priority. He emphasised the need to support various sports disciplines beyond football and unveiled the Olympic Champion Project, an initiative designed to nurture athletes in preparation for the 2028 and 2032 Olympic Games. This project reflects the government’s dedication to advancing Iraq’s presence on the global sports stage.
