Political Newcomer Ali al-Zaidi Named Prime Minister-Designate

Ali Faleh Kazem al-Zaidi has been appointed as Iraq’s prime minister-designate, tasked with forming the country’s next government following his nomination by the Coordination Framework, the largest bloc in parliament. Al-Zaidi takes on the role at a critical moment in Iraq’s political transition, as it seeks to form a stable cabinet capable of addressing ongoing economic and governance challenges.

Following their meeting on Monday, Coordination Framework said in a statement: “After considering the names of the candidates, Ali al-Zaidi was chosen to be the candidate… to occupy the position of prime minister and form the next government”.

Al-Zaidi, born in Baghdad in 1986, is a multimillionaire banker, businessman and relative newcomer to politics, with a background in finance and law. He has held senior roles in Iraq’s private sector, including chairing major investment and banking institutions, and previously worked with the Ministry of Trade overseeing the national ration system. Analysts note that his lack of political history may be his greatest asset in a deeply polarised landscape.

Several prominent Iraqi political figures quickly welcomed the appointment, offering congratulations and support. Prime Minister Al-Sudani expressed his readiness to cooperate in forming the new government, while President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party Masoud Barzani emphasised the need for stronger coordination among national forces. Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi also welcomed the move, wishing al-Zaidi success in strengthening state institutions.

Among regional partners, Prime Minister of Jordan Jafar Hassan and Prime Minister of Qatar Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani sent messages of congratulations and backing Iraq’s next phase of governance.

Internationally, French Ambassador Patrick Durel reiterated Paris’s commitment to supporting Iraq in advancing stability, reform, and institutional development, alongside efforts to promote regional peace and prosperity. Similarly, The British Embassy in Baghdad affirmed its readiness to work with the incoming administration on key challenges, particularly security and the economy..

The coming weeks will be critical as efforts shift toward forming a government capable of addressing pressing economic and political challenges. With broad domestic and international support, attention now turns to whether the new administration can deliver stability, effective governance, and tangible improvements for the Iraqi people. If successful, this transition could mark a renewed phase of cohesion and development for the country.
