Last week, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani led a meeting on the implementation of rapid and smart solutions to enhance electricity supplies in rural Iraq. The General Coordinator for Governorate Affairs and the Head of the National Renewable Energy Team were also in attendance, along with other officials and advisors on the subject.
The committee assessed proposed systems to integrate new generation solar energy projects in the peripheries of Baghdad as well as other governorates. The systems are planned to be connected to medium voltage electricity distribution lines, which will increase generation capacity and lighten their load pressure, reducing system losses. Such outcomes are highly desirable to better manage the country’s electricity needs for the upcoming summer season.
PM Al-Sudani also reviewed proposed plans to implement these projects and availability to advertise their lucrative opportunities, as more than 120 sites covering the area of interest have already been established. The committee has taken on an economic model drawing from proposals with highly competitive costs, which guarantee alleviated strain on the national electricity grid and provide for existing electricity supply gaps.
The meeting has proven that cooperation between various government agencies is crucial to implementing such projects. With this in mind, it is expected that further meetings between the Commission for Coordination between Governorates and provincial governors will ensue in order to finalise implementation mechanisms for new-generation energy solutions projects.
