Captain Khalid Al-Najjar, Take-off and Safety Officer, confirmed that paragliding activities in Sulaymaniyah Governorate have witnessed growing interest, transforming the sport into one of the most prominent adventure attractions and a key driver of tourism in the region.
Paragliding activities are organised across several locations in Sulaymaniyah, selected according to prior bookings and suitable weather conditions. Multiple take off altitudes are available, including 450 meters, 850 meters, and 1,676 meters, offering participants a range of flight experiences tailored to different preferences and skill levels.

The average flight duration ranges between 15 and 25 minutes, with wind conditions playing a decisive role in determining the exact length of each flight, as they are the primary natural factor controlling the journey. The maximum permitted weight for paragliding is set at 125 kilograms, in line with approved safety standards.

Captain Al-Najjar explained that all flights are conducted under the supervision of professional instructors holding internationally recognized licenses issued by APPL and officially accredited by the World Paragliding Federation. He emphasized that operating without certified and licensed crews poses serious risks to participants’ lives.
He added that for thrill seeking participants, some flights may include light acrobatic movements performed purely for entertainment, always within strict safety protocols and under direct professional supervision.

In parallel with tourist flights, comprehensive training programs are offered for both men and women who aspire to become certified paragliding pilots. These programs include structured theoretical and practical lessons. Upon successful completion of the course, trainees are granted an individual paragliding license, allowing them to fly independently.
Paragliding in Sulaymaniyah stands as a successful model of adventure tourism, combining excitement, professional organization, and strict adherence to international safety standards, while contributing to the growth of the local tourism sector.
