Oman-Iraq Committee Strengthens Ties with New Agreements

The Iraqi-Omani Joint Committee Convenes and Agrees to Enhance Cooperation in Economic, Trade, and Cultural Sectors

The ninth session of the Iraqi-Omani Joint Committee took place in Baghdad on Sunday, chaired by H.E. Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Oman’s Foreign Minister, and Fuad Hussein, Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. The meeting reinforced the historic ties between the two nations, focusing on strengthening collaboration across economic, trade, and cultural sectors.

H.E. Sayyid Badr brought light to the deep-rooted partnership between Oman and Iraq, emphasising the shared vision of fostering prosperity and regional stability. He highlighted Oman’s commitment to implementing joint projects in key areas, including economic and cultural collaboration, and commended Iraq’s leadership in addressing Arab and regional issues, particularly the Palestinian cause.

Discussions at the session prioritised:

  • Economic collaboration: Identifying investment opportunities and enhancing trade exchange to boost mutual growth.
  • Cultural exchange: Promoting shared heritage through joint programmes and initiatives to strengthen cultural ties.
  • Trade development: Facilitating the movement of goods and services to advance mutual economic benefits.

Fuad Hussein praised Oman’s vital role in promoting regional security and stability. He expressed Iraq’s dedication to deepening bilateral cooperation, highlighting the importance of sustained dialogue to address shared challenges and achieve sustainable development.

The session culminated in the signing of two memoranda of understanding. The first establishes a framework for political consultations between the two foreign ministries, while the second fosters cooperation in diplomatic training through a partnership between Oman’s Diplomatic Academy and Iraq’s Institute of Foreign Service.

Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to implementing these agreements and advancing their partnership. This meeting represents a significant step towards realising the aspirations of their peoples and fostering a stronger, multifaceted relationship.
