The Nisour Square Development Project, a major urban infrastructure initiative in Baghdad, has been successfully completed by the Chinese company Transtech.
The project tackles one of the city’s most notorious traffic congestion points, providing a modern solution to ease the flow of vehicles in Nisour Square. The square has long been a critical junction for commuters, and the high volume of traffic had caused frequent bottlenecks, frustrating residents and hindering transportation efficiency. The worsening congestion prompted Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani to initiate the “Nisour Square Expansion Project” in 2023, aiming to alleviate these chronic issues and improve the daily lives of commuters.
Transtech’s approach to resolving these issues involved the construction of new roads, improved traffic management systems, and the installation of advanced signaling technologies. The project also included pedestrian-friendly walkways and overpasses to enhance safety and accessibility for the public. By incorporating smart traffic technologies, Transtech has significantly reduced travel times in the area, contributing to smoother commutes and improved air quality.
The completion of the Nisour Square Development Project marks a milestone in Baghdad’s broader urban development plans, reflecting Iraq’s ongoing efforts to modernise its infrastructure with international collaboration. This project is expected to set a precedent for future congestion relief solutions in other parts of the capital.
