New Railway to Transform Iran-Iraq Tourism Ties

As part of a plan between Iran and Iraq to increase tourism between the two countries, new travel routes are being built, with an impressive goal of 10 million tourists a year.

The Khorramshahr and Abadan-Basra railway route, set to be the first ever railway line to be built between Iran and Iraq, is now underway.

Iran’s Minister of Cultural Heritage Seyyed Reza Salehi Amiri and Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s efforts to boost tourism links in many areas, specifically focusing on pilgrimage tourism, marks a crucial point of cooperation between the two countries.

The decision to take advantage of the two countries’ shared border of almost 1600km and potential for cultural and religious exchanges, especially during the Arbaeen pilgrimage, aims to be the start of a series of mutually beneficial initiatives.
