Iraq has inaugurated a new 63-kilometre link road connecting the Grand Faw Port to Umm Qasr, marking a key step in strengthening the country’s transport and logistics network.
The project forms part of the wider development of the Grand Faw Port and is designed to support the movement of freight between Iraq’s major southern gateways. The newly opened corridor includes two major bridges and three dedicated lanes for trucks and heavy cargo, improving efficiency and reducing congestion on existing routes.
Engineers equipped the road with a solar-powered lighting system, providing sustainable, low-cost illumination along the full length of the route. Officials noted that the design incorporates a high-specification safety wall, built to international standards to support secure traffic flow and minimise risks for drivers.
During the inauguration ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and Minister of Transport Mr Razzaq Muhibis Al-Saadawi, the Ministry highlighted the project’s role in enhancing Iraq’s long-term infrastructure plans and supporting commercial activity linked to the development of Grand Faw Port.
The link road is expected to ease the transport of goods between Faw and Umm Qasr, strengthen Iraq’s southern logistics corridor, and contribute to future phases of port expansion.
