Nasiriyah, Iraq Joins UNESCO's Global Network of Learning Cities

In an exciting announcement from UNESCO Iraq, the city of Nasiriyah, Iraq, has been selected to join UNESCO’s global network of Learning Cities.

Initially launched in 2013, UNESCO’s Global Network of Learning Cities initiative now includes 425 cities from 91 countries globally and provides support for lifelong learning opportunities for nearly 500 million citizens.

The UNESCO learning cities are communities where learning is at the forefront of daily life, across schools, workplaces, libraries, homes and public spaces. They create and offer opportunities for all by retraining and upgrading the skillset of existing workers to meet changing job market standards, in addition to providing literacy for those who missed out in early years.

Iraq is one of the 12 countries joining the Global Network of Learning Cities for the first time this year, alongside: Benin, Burkina Faso, Chile, Cyprus, Guinea-Bissau, Iraq, Mongolia, Niger, Turkmenistan, United States of America, Venezuela, and Zambia.
This selection represents the recognition of Nasiriyah’s role in encouraging high standards of learning across the city.
