Iraq's New Green Initiative Enhances Sustainability Around Nineveh’s Historic Wall

The Nineveh Antiquities and Heritage Inspectorate has launched an ambitious initiative to plant 21 million seeds around the iconic archaeological site.

In partnership with the Muthabiroun Foundation, the project aims to enrich green spaces and protect the visual beauty and ecological balance of one of Iraq’s most significant cultural landmarks.

Each seed is expected to grow into a plant capable of producing multiple flowers, with every flower yielding hundreds of new seeds. Over time, this natural cycle will allow hollyhock plants to spread sustainably and support long-term environmental renewal around the historic wall.

The initiative underscores Iraq’s shared commitment, across public institutions and civil society, to safeguarding Nineveh’s rich past while laying strong foundations for its future.
