Iraqi universities have achieved a new milestone on the global academic stage after recording strong progress in the GreenMetric 2025 sustainability ranking. Iraq participated with 87 universities among 1,745 institutions from 105 countries, marking one of its most prominent showings to date.
Leading the national results, the University of Babylon ranked 114th globally, followed by the University of Anbar at 142 and Al-Mustaqbal University at 166. The Middle Technical University delivered the most striking improvement, climbing to 197 after a significant leap from last year. Other institutions including the universities of Baghdad, Karbala, Al-Kafeel, also recorded clear gains, while the University of Diyala continued its upward trajectory.
GreenMetric evaluates universities based on measurable policies across energy, water, waste management, transportation, climate action and sustainability-focused education and research. This year introduced a new pillar recognising real institutional stories that demonstrate impact within local communities.
Globally, sustainability has become central to leading higher education systems. British universities have adopted strict emission-reduction models, Japan has developed highly efficient campus management systems, and European institutions especially in Germany, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries operate under advanced environmental frameworks. These models provide practical pathways for Iraqi universities as they work to strengthen competitiveness.
