Iraqi Prime Minister Opens Al-Muhandis Rehab Complex

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani inaugurated the Martyr Al-Muhandis Rehabilitation Complex in Baghdad on Thursday evening. The newly established facility is designed to treat addiction through medical interventions, psychological rehabilitation, and social reintegration programmes.

The government built complex spans 12 dunams and consists of seven specialised treatment and rehabilitation centres, along with seven administrative and support units. It will be staffed by a team of medical professionals, therapists, and social researchers from various specialised medical fields.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani described the inauguration of the complex as a key step in improving Iraq’s public health infrastructure and supporting those in need, particularly the most vulnerable groups of society. He also emphasised the symbolic significance of naming the complex after Al-Muhandis, a figure locally associated with sacrifice, service, and dedication to the public good.

The Prime Minister highlighted the psychological, social, and medical services provided by the complex to combat the growing issue of drug addiction. He stressed the need for realistic and medical solutions to address this pressing challenge and noted that the complex would play a central role in supporting national health institutions in dealing with addiction cases.

This initiative falls within the broader framework of the government’s commitment to strengthening the health sector, which includes expanding hospital infrastructure, enhancing joint hospital operations, and localising the pharmaceutical industry.
