The United Nations Climate Conference (COP30) has begun in Belém, Brazil, running from November 6th to 21st, 2025. Leaders and delegates from nations around the world have gathered to discuss global climate change issues, with hopes to enable stronger mitigation and adaptation efforts in response to the challenges ahead.
The Minister of Environment, Dr. Haval Al-Askari, is leading the Iraqi delegation. In a press statement, the Minster emphasises the substantial environmental pressures Iraq faces brought about by climate change, including but not limited to water scarcity, droughts, rising temperatures, desertification, and frequent dust storms.
The Minister goes on to highlight that one of the main goals of the delegation at COP30 is to secure support from the Green Climate Fund, in the form of financial and technical assistance to enable projects such as renewable energy development, the repurposing of associated gas, increasing afforestation activity, and fostering sustainable governance of water resources.
Accompanying the Minister is a supportive team that includes Dr. Firas Hassan Al-Hamdani, Iraq’s Chargé d’Affaires, along with a delegation of experts, officials, and academics from a diverse range of Iraqi ministries. They are further supported by the Iraqi negotiation team, whose mission centres on pursing Iraq’s climate change priorities and advancing its strategic national stance.
