Iraq’s women’s national football team is preparing for a crucial second match in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers, set to face Mongolia on 26 June, in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The team opened their Group B campaign with a 0-0 draw against Timor-Leste on Monday, showing strong defensive structure and team spirit, especially after being reduced to ten players in the second half.
All eyes are now on Thursday’s game, with the players focused and motivated during training sessions held at the Chiang Mai International Sports Complex. The team is being coached to sharpen their attacking options, knowing that a win against Mongolia is vital to keep qualification hopes alive.
The Mongolian side comes into the match after a 13-0 defeat against India , and Iraq sees this as a key opportunity to secure their first win of the campaign and build momentum ahead of their soon to come future games
The Iraqi Football Association’s growing support for women’s football has been evident throughout the qualifiers. The presence of Dr Rasha Talib, head of the Women’s Committee, at recent training sessions reflects a broader push to empower female athletes and promote gender equality in sport.
For Iraq, each game represents more than just competition, it’s a statement of progress for women’s sport in the country.
