Iraq Women Show Resilience in AFC Qualifiers

The Iraq women’s national football team wrapped up their AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifying journey with a tough 5–0 loss to India in Chiang Mai, Thailand. But beyond the score line, the team left the pitch with heads held high, proud of a campaign that showcased determination, growth, and a renewed sense of belief.

Grouped in a competitive Group B, Iraq began their run on 23 June with a 0–0 draw against Timor-Leste. That was followed by a standout moment in their second match: a 5–2 win over Mongolia. It was not just a convincing performance, but also Iraq’s first win in Asian Cup qualifiers in more than ten years, a landmark moment for women’s football in the country.

The team’s third match, Iraq fell 7–0 in a game facing hosts Thailand, one of the region’s stronger sides, where the team struggled to contain the home side’s quick passing and attacking style.

Their final game, played on 2nd July against India, ended in a 5–0 defeat, bringing their journey to a close.

Iraq finished third in their group with four points from four matches. Thailand topped the group on goal difference, with both Thailand and India tied at nine points. Only the top team in each group moves on to the next round, meaning Iraq won’t progress. Though the experience gained in Thailand could prove just as valuable in the long run.

For the players and coaches, the tournament was more than just a string of results, it was a step forward in building a serious and competitive women’s team that can grow with time. Moments like the win over Mongolia have already inspired attention at home, where fans, especially young girls, are starting to see a place for themselves in the sport.

Behind the scenes, the team was powered by  The Trade Bank of Iraq, the national team’s main sponsor, played a key role in making this journey possible. Their backing marked a rare but promising step toward institutional support for women’s sport in Iraq.

Iraq’s players have shown they’re ready to work hard. With more experience, support from sponsors and fans, and focus on grassroots growth, this team can become a symbol of skill, pride, and resilience.
