Iraq, US Discuss Consulate Openings and Expanded Cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, received U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Mr Michael Rigas, in Baghdad to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation between Iraq and the United States. The meeting focused on advancing economic and developmental cooperation, supporting investment opportunities, and encouraging the return of American companies to operate in Iraq.

Mr Fuad Hussein also highlighted the importance of updating travel advisories to reflect improvements in the country and to facilitate greater commercial and cultural engagement. 

The reopening of the U.S. Consulate in Basra and the upcoming opening in Erbil were highlighted as key measures to expand diplomatic services and engagement

Following the official talks, Mr Mohammed Hussein Bahr El-Uloom, Representative of the Ministry of Bilateral Relations, hosted a business dinner in honour of Mr Rigas. The dinner continued discussions on improving institutional cooperation and strengthening communication channels between the two countries.

The meeting was attended by senior diplomatic figures, including Ambassador Mohammed Hisham Al-Fatian, Ambassador Nizar Al-Hakim, Ambassador Mohammed Al-Shammari, and U.S. Embassy official Joshua Harris.

Both sides emphasised maintaining dialogue and coordination to advance development and bilateral cooperation.
