Iraq, TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy Launch GGIP Projects

Iraq has taken a major step in expanding its energy sector with the signing of agreements under the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP) at the Artawi Field in Basra. The deals bring together the Ministry of Oil, TotalEnergies of France, QatarEnergy, and international partners from Turkey, China, and Korea.

The signing ceremony, held on Sunday, was overseen by Prime Minister Mohammad Al-Sudani and attended by senior Iraqi officials alongside international executives, including Qatari Energy Minister Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi and TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné.

The Prime Minister said the agreements reflect Iraq’s improving investment climate and reaffirmed that the country is open to reputable companies to support infrastructure, economic growth, and public services.

The project covers oil, gas, and clean energy development. It includes the joint operation of the Artawi Field, the construction of a seawater treatment plant to sustain oil production, a central oil and gas processing facility equipped with zero gas flaring technology, and a gas processing plant to capture and process associated gas. These developments are expected to modernise infrastructure, reduce emissions, and enhance energy security.

Al-Sudani urged partners to accelerate implementation, highlighting the importance of the gas and clean energy components.

Once completed, the project will add around 1,000 megawatts of solar power to Iraq’s national grid, with the first phase expected to start contributing early next year.

The agreements mark a milestone in Iraq’s efforts to strengthen its oil and gas production while also moving towards cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
