Iraq to Improve Security Measures at Umm Qasr Port After Meeting with Ports Manager

Iraq’s General Company for Ports’ manager, Dr. Farhan Al-Furtousi, met yesterday March 4th with leaders from the army, police, and intelligence services in the Basra Governorate to review security plans for ports on the Persian Gulf.

Umm Qasr Port is Iraq’s primary seaport, it is located on the western edge of the Al-Faw peninsula and consists of three port zones named the North, South, and Central zones.

The meeting discussed Iraq’s readiness to protect trade movement, the supply chain, and port security in the Umm Qasr port on the Kuwaiti border amid regional escalations in the Hormuz Strait. 

Dr Al-Furtousi said that the meeting highlighted the continued execution of a plan to fortify Umm Qasr’s North and South ports’ technology and security by strengthening and updating lighting, monitoring and control systems, and Securing waterfronts, container yards, foreign ship berths, and international shipping lines.
