The Ministry of Youth and Sports, in cooperation with the Shafaq Foundation for Human Rights, has organized the launch of the National Guidelines for Combating Child Labour. The guide is meant to show an alliance in governmental organizations and human rights organizations to help ensure that children are provided with fundamental human rights and providing a safe environment for them to grow. The spokesman also informed that supporting educational programs and raising awareness to fight against child labour would help in combating it within Iraq borders. The exact contents of the guidelines will be revealed at a later time.
The Shafak Foundation is a humanitarian organization based in Turkey, which was originally founded as a response to the Syrian crisis in 2011.
This launch is only the latest effort to combat child labour from the Iraqi government, with a previous effort being the Decent Work Country Programme back in 2021, while in cooperation with the International Labour Organization. The guide itself also aims at providing a practical framework in reducing and promoting awareness in the average civilian on child labour. The event also hosted a screening for a documentary based on child labour along with speakers from both governmental and non-government organizations to represent different perspectives on child labour prevention.
