Iraq Signs National Agreement to Combat Chemical Pollution

The Ministry of Environment, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with support from the World Bank, witnessed the signing of a national agreement for the management of chemical pollution and persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

The agreement addresses growing environmental challenges, particularly in conflict-affected areas, where chemical pollution poses long-term risks to human health and the environment. Vulnerable groups, including displaced families, rural communities, women and youth, are disproportionately affected.

The collaboration aims to establish a national program to tackle chemical contamination and polluted sites, enhance monitoring and laboratory capabilities, reduce health hazards, as well as empower local communities and civil society organisations to raise awareness, promoting safe environmental practices.

Officials emphasised that the signing represents more than a formal commitment – it reflects a shared pledge to build a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Iraq.
