Iraq Opens Samawah Fuel Depot to Boost Supply Network

Iraq has opened a major fuel storage facility in Al-Muthanna Governorate, a move officials say will support the country’s push to expand refining capacity and improve energy security.

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani inaugurated the Samawah Depot on Wednesday, describing it as one of several long-delayed infrastructure projects his government has revived. The facility, which can store up to 75,000 cubic metres of petroleum products, is expected to ensure a stable supply to the nearby Samawah Refinery, currently producing around 30,000 barrels per day.

“This project strengthens the secure flow of fuel to the refinery and enhances the distribution network in the governorate,” Mr Al-Sudani said during the visit.

The depot consists of 19 storage tanks, loading yards and weighbridge systems designed to serve a growing number of industrial facilities in the region  including cement and chemical plants, food factories and upcoming asphalt production projects.

The Prime Minister said the development would also reduce dependence on tanker trucks, helping to protect transport infrastructure and reduce traffic risks.

Iraq is working to increase its national refining output to reduce reliance on imported fuel. Officials say upgrades and new facilities are under way across several provinces. In Samawah, the government plans to add around 70,000 barrels per day in new refining capacity as part of a broader national strategy.

Al-Sudani added that Al-Muthanna’s expanding role in the oil sector could justify the creation of a dedicated company to manage operations locally, positioning the governorate to attract further investment.
