Iraq, Lukoil Discuss Oil Supply Stability

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met today with Vagit Alekperov, Founder of the Russian oil company Lukoil, to discuss measures to maintain steady oil production and support Iraq’s energy sector.

The discussions centred on the West Qurna oil field, which currently produces approximately 480,000 barrels per day, and ways to address challenges affecting the implementation of Lukoil’s investment contracts. Both sides explored approaches to ensure uninterrupted production while keeping Iraq’s output aligned with approved levels.

The meeting also highlighted Iraq’s role in contributing reliably to global energy markets. Maintaining stability in oil production is seen as critical for both domestic energy planning and international supply security.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani emphasised the country’s commitment to consistent oil output and the importance of effective collaboration with key international partners in the sector.

The talks come amid a period of heightened focus on energy security and market reliability, with Iraq continuing to implement projects and partnerships that strengthen the operational capacity of its oil fields. Lukoil, as one of the major foreign investors in Iraq, plays a key role in production and infrastructure development at West Qurna.

Both parties agreed to continue close coordination to monitor production levels and ensure that challenges are addressed promptly, safeguarding Iraq’s contribution to global oil markets.
