Iraq Launches New Maysan Pharmaceutical Production Plant

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani has inaugurated the construction of the Maysan Medical Solutions and Pharmaceuticals Plant, marking a major milestone in Iraq’s efforts to strengthen its healthcare and pharmaceutical sector. The plant, the second of its kind in Iraq, represents a key private sector initiative in Maysan Province.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the healthcare sector remains a top government priority. He expressed full confidence in the private sector’s ability to meet national needs for medicines and medical supplies, noting that recent progress in pharmaceutical manufacturing has become a cornerstone of Iraq’s pharmaceutical security.

The new facility will focus on producing intravenous medical solutions for southern provinces, utilising modern German production lines and advanced technologies. Over the past two years, Iraq has inaugurated five factories producing life-saving intravenous solutions, raising local production coverage to 70%, with full self sufficiency expected by early next year.

Nationally, the local pharmaceutical industry now meets 40–45% of domestic demand, with 13 factories already operational, 19 under construction, and 170 applications for new pharmaceutical plants under review.

This initiative not only aims to reduce dependency on imports but also creates job opportunities, encourages technological transfer, and ensures a steady supply of critical medicines. The Maysan plant is part of Iraq’s broader strategy to modernise its pharmaceutical industry and improve access to high-quality medical products for citizens across the country.
