Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani has laid the foundation stone for Iraq’s first plastic granules factory in Babil Governorate, describing it as a key step in building the country’s industrial future.
The project, developed by the United Company for Petrochemical Industries, will have a daily production capacity of 960 tons. The granules are a vital raw material for plastic manufacturing, which Iraq currently imports.
Al-Sudani, joined by Governor Adnan Fayhan al-Dulaimi and other senior officials at the launch ceremony, said the facility reflects the government’s commitment to turning industrial investment into a driver of growth and opportunity for Iraqis.
By producing them locally, the factory is expected to reduce import dependence, supply domestic industries, and create new jobs in Babil and surrounding provinces.
The project will also boost Iraq’s wider economic diversification strategy, aimed at reducing reliance on oil revenues and strengthening the role of the private sector.
