Iraq Joins Global Telecom Regulation Summit in Ankara

Iraq’s Communication and Media Commission (CMC) is participating the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) in Ankara this week, a major international gathering focused on telecommunications regulation and digital technology.

The Iraqi delegation is headed by head of the CMC’s executive body, Mr. Balegh Abu Kalal and includes three members of its Board of Commissioners, Mr. Ahmed Al-Hassani, Mr. Dana Asaad, and Mr. Ahmed Raad Al-Saffar, as well as the Assistant Head of the Executive Body for Technical Affairs, Mr. Mohammed Al-Gharbawi.

The symposium brings together regulators and industry experts from around the world to discuss issues relation to digital governance, 5G regulation, cybersecurity, consumer protection and fair competition in telecommunications markets.

So far, the CMC has taken part in a specialised workshop discussing prospective Iraqi Communications Law, comparing coverage levels with a number of regional partners, including Egypt and Jordan. The purpose of this legislative dialogue is to develop telecommunications framework that looks to bring Iraq “in line with modern technical and regulatory changes.”

Alongside their GSR commitments, the CMC delegation also met with the Iraqi ambassador to Turkey, discussing Iraq’s presence in similar telecommunications forums and future cooperation between the Media and Communications Commission and the Iraqi Embassy in Ankara

The CMC says their participation in this year’s GSR reflects Iraq’s efforts to cooperate with international regulatory institutions and benefit from global technical expertise.
