Iraq’s national football team is set to face South Korea in a decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match tonight at Basra’s Palm Trunk Stadium, kicking off at 9:15 PM local time.
Head coach Graham Arnold voiced his optimism during a pre-match press conference on Wednesday, praising the team’s discipline and focus throughout a well organised training camp that began on May 25. “The training camp was excellent, I’ve met all the players, and everyone is ready,” he said.
Team captain Jalal Hassan echoed the coach’s confidence, “our morale is high, and the harmony among players is clear. We are fully prepared and must enter with a winning mentality qualification this is our goal.”
Currently sitting third in Group B, Iraq tracks group leaders South Korea by four points and second-placed Jordan by one. With only two matches remaining, wins against both South Korea tonight and Jordan next week are likely essential for direct qualification to the World Cup.
The Iraqi Football Association confirmed all preparations have been finalised for this match. A meeting of the organising committee addressed all logistical and administrative aspects, including media coordination.
IFA First Deputy President Ali Jabbar emphasised the significance of the occasion and the importance of this match on their World Cup journey. IFA member Ghalib Al-Zamili highlighted Iraq’s growing ability to host major football events and called for full compliance with FIFA regulations to ensure a smooth and professional operation.
As anticipation builds, fans across Iraq will be eager for a strong performance from the Lions of Mesopotamia in front of a passionate home crowd.
