Iraq, Greece Resume Strategic Committee Meetings After 25 Years

After a 25-year pause, Iraq and Greece have reignited their strategic dialogue with the ninth meeting of the Iraq-Greece Joint Committee, held recently in Baghdad. The meeting was co-chaired by Iraq’s Deputy Minister of Construction, Housing, and Municipalities, Ali Hussein Abdul Amir, and Greece’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Haris Theoharis.

The session focused on revitalising existing agreements between the two countries and exploring new avenues for economic and trade cooperation. Both sides emphasised the importance of building strong, long-term partnerships that benefit governments, local communities, and businesses alike.

The meeting underlined Iraq’s ongoing urban and infrastructure development, creating opportunities for Greek companies to contribute to projects across multiple sectors. Key areas of focus include modernising roads, bridges, and public services, as well as expanding investment opportunities and trade links.

Greece recognised Iraq’s progress in improving public services and enhancing infrastructure, signalling readiness to support ongoing projects and participate in new initiatives. The revival of the committee represents more than a return to formal talks; it is a step towards strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two nations.
