Iraq, Greece enhance cultural cooperation at Athens forum

Iraqi Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities Professor Dr. Ahmed Fakkak Al-Badrani met with Greek Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni on the sidelines of the ninth ministerial meeting of the Forum of Ancient Civilizations in Athens to discuss strengthening cultural cooperation between the two countries.

Both sides stressed the importance of expanding bilateral partnerships in the protection and preservation of cultural heritage and increasing cooperation in archaeology and heritage studies, reflecting the historic ties between Iraq and Greece.

The Forum concluded with the adoption of the Athens Declaration, reaffirming member states’ commitments and reinforcing the Forum’s role as an international platform for intercultural dialogue. Participants voiced concern over the growing targeting of cultural property in conflict zones and called for stronger international action to combat illegal trafficking, while also welcoming the UN designation of 15 July as the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.

Discussions also highlighted the threats posed by counterfeit antiquities and climate change to cultural heritage, as Iraq reaffirmed its commitment to cultural diplomacy and the protection of humanity’s shared heritage.
