Iraq has achieved 160 megawatts of electricity generation from a solar facility under the South Iraq Integrated Project, part of a wider energy initiative led by the government in partnership with TotalEnergies.
Deputy Prime Minister for Energy and Oil Minister Hayyan Abdul Ghani Al-Sawad said the output was produced during the first phase of the project, which is expected to reach 250 megawatts in the coming days.
The solar development forms part of a planned 1,000-MW renewable energy facility aimed at strengthening Iraq’s electricity generation capacity.
Officials said the project relies on solar radiation to generate electricity and does not require fuel, supporting efforts to diversify Iraq’s energy mix and reduce pressure on conventional power resources.
