Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fouad Hussein, met with FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu on last Friday, at the United Nations agency’s headquarters in Rome to discuss expanding cooperation in food security, sustainable agriculture, and climate adaptation.
The meeting reviewed prospects for joint initiatives in sustainable agricultural development, water resource management, and adaptation to climate change impacts, particularly in areas of Iraq affected by environmental challenges. Hussein emphasised Iraq’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with FAO and leveraging the agency’s expertise to enhance national food security and agricultural resilience.
Qu Dongyu highlighted Iraq’s central role in the FAO as a founding member in 1945 and underlined the organization’s view of Iraq as a pivotal regional partner. He pledged to expand support and cooperation programs aimed at achieving sustainable development goals, improving agricultural productivity, and strengthening food security.
Both sides agreed on the importance of continued coordination and consultation in the coming period to ensure effective implementation of initiatives that serve mutual interests and regional development priorities.
