Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani has announced a major boost to Iraq’s national power grid with the launch of a new 400 kV transmission line linking Amarah and Maysan. The project, inaugurated on Monday, delivers up to 1,000 MW over a 52-kilometre route between Al-Kahla District and Al-Batira District.
Speaking at the site, the Prime Minister said the government is prioritising sustained investment in electricity infrastructure to meet growing demand and reduce supply interruptions. He added that improvements in transmission and distribution are just as critical as power generation, ensuring energy is delivered efficiently, safely, and with fewer losses.
The new line will reinforce energy flow between southern and central provinces increasing supply stability in Al-Batira, western Amarah, and several neighbouring districts. It forms part of a wider programme of three strategic transmission projects aimed at supporting regional connectivity and easing pressure on the national grid.
The Premier confirmed that the second transmission route the Al-Qurna to Amarah 400 kV line is due to enter service within days, while construction of the third line connecting Maysan to Kut has reached 75 per cent completion.
Al-Sudani emphasised that the government’s broader electricity strategy focuses not only on expanding capacity, but also improving management of the entire system to minimise grid congestion, strengthen resilience, and ensure more reliable power delivery during peak demand periods.
The Prime Minister concluded that strengthening the transmission network represents a vital step in achieving long-term energy stability for citizens and supporting Iraq’s economic growth.
