Iraq Defeats UAE to Reach World Cup Play-Off

The Iraqi national football team booked their place in the intercontinental play-offs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 2–1 victory over the United Arab Emirates in Basra on Tuesday, securing a 3–2 aggregate win across the two-leg Asian play-off.

The match, held at Basra’s Palm Trunk Stadium, drew thousands of passionate supporters who rallied behind the Lions of Mesopotamia from the opening whistle.

After a tense first half that ended goalless, the UAE broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute through Caio Lucas. Iraq equalised in the 66th minute when Mohanad Ali headed home a cross from Amir Al-Ammari.
