The Ministry of Transport – General Company for Ports of Iraq announced on Monday the completion of two offshore platforms designed to monitor meteorological and hydrographic conditions as part of the navigation channel project at Al-Faw Grand Port.
Director General Dr. Farhan Al-Fartousi said the platforms, installed under the guidance of Transport Minister Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, will provide real-time data on tides, sea currents, wave height and wind speed.
The information links directly to the port’s central system, ensuring accurate monitoring and effective planning for vessel movements once operations begin.
Al-Fartousi described the platforms as a vital element of the port’s infrastructure, enabling safe entry and exit for large ships. He added that they will also support long-term planning for maintenance, channel expansion, and environmental management.
The navigation channel project stretches 23 kilometres, with a width of 200 metres and depths reaching 19.8 metres, requiring dredging of more than 58 million cubic metres.
The ministry said completing the platforms highlights Iraq’s commitment to building maritime infrastructure to international standards. Once operational, Al-Faw Grand Port will be capable of receiving the world’s largest vessels, strengthening Iraq’s position in regional trade.
