In a major step towards achieving its climate action goals, the second phase of the Basra Natural Gas Liquefaction Plant has been launched, adding 200 cubic metres per day to its gas processing capacity.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, alongside the Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul-Ghani Al-Sawad officially opened the facility on Thursday, 24th July. The project is a pivotal part of Iraq’s ongoing efforts to cut carbon emissions.

Since the government took office, gas investment rates have increased from 53% to nearly 70%. This has resulted in a sharp drop in emissions and positive progress toward Iraq’s pledges under the Paris Climate Agreement.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Oil, Basra Gas Company, and local government.
