The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Dr. Mohamed Al Hassan, commended Iraq’s first population census in 37 years, describing it as a cornerstone for the nation’s development and progress.
Dr. Al Hassan’s remarks came during his visit with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani to the Population Census Operations Centre at the Ministry of Planning. The two officials, along with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning Dr. Mohammed Tamim, were briefed on the census procedures, data collection methods, and ongoing updates.
Calling the initiative a “historic phase” for Iraq, Dr. Al Hassan acknowledged the professionalism and seriousness displayed throughout the process. He highlighted the significant role the census will play in Iraq’s future, stating, “The progress of states depends primarily on the census. This step ensures the equitable distribution of resources, access to public services, and rights for all Iraqis.”
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) was also praised for its technical support in facilitating the operation. Dr. Al Hassan encouraged public cooperation, emphasising the broader benefits of accurate data for Iraq’s planning and development.
On behalf of the United Nations, Dr. Al Hassan extended congratulations to the Iraqi government and the teams involved, wishing success in building a better and more equitable future for the country.
The census, a critical milestone, is expected to provide the foundation for effective governance, fair resource allocation, and informed decision-making to address the nation’s developmental challenges.
