Iraq Beat Hong Kong to Reach King’s Cup Final

Iraq’s national football team marched into the final of the 51st King’s Cup 2025 after a spirited 2–1 victory over Hong Kong in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, on Thursday.

The Iraq vs Hong Kong semi-final remained goalless in the first half, but Hong Kong stunned the Lions of Mesopotamia with a penalty from Matthew Orr in the 61st minute. Iraq quickly responded, as striker Mohanad Ali levelled the score six minutes later, before netting the winner in the 81st minute to complete his brace.

Iraq dominated possession throughout, creating more chances and showing greater control in midfield. Their resilience after falling behind highlighted both the depth and determination within the Iraq national football team.

This victory also marks an encouraging start under newly appointed head coach Graham Arnold, the former Australia manager who took charge earlier this year following the departure of Jesús Casas.

Under Casas, Iraq lifted the 2023 Gulf Cup and showed promise in the Asian Cup, but inconsistent World Cup qualifying results led to his dismissal.

Arnold’s first tournament win signals fresh momentum and renewed belief.

With a place in the King’s Cup final, Iraq now have the chance to lift the historic trophy and carry confidence into their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

For Iraqi fans, the comeback win is more than just progress in Thailand, it’s a glimpse of what a new chapter could hold for their team.
