Iraq and Türkiye Expand Cooperation on Trade and Water

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met on Sunday with representatives of 17 Turkish companies to discuss new opportunities for cooperation in investment, trade, and infrastructure. The meeting, also attended by senior Iraqi officials and the Turkish Ambassador, highlighted growing economic ties between the two neighbours.

Talks centred on the Iraq–Türkiye water framework agreement, which came into effect in September 2024. The deal, signed by Al-Sudani and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, aims to improve joint management of water resources a long standing challenge for both countries.

Al-Sudani stressed that his government is committed to providing a stable and attractive investment climate, noting that trade between Iraq and Türkiye has already exceeded $20 billion.

He pointed to the Development Road Project as a major opportunity to expand cooperation, describing it as a key pillar of Iraq’s future role as a regional trade hub.

The Prime Minister praised Turkish companies for their growing footprint in Iraq and said new legislation is being prepared to further ease investment.

Talks signalled a shift in Iraq–Türkiye ties towards more tangible economic collaboration, particularly in the fields of water and infrastructure.
