Iraq and Spain Boost Cooperation to Restore Nineveh Heritage

A recent visit to Iraq by the Spanish delegation signalled a renewed, shared commitment to protecting and restoring the rich archaeological landscape of the Nineveh province.

With over 2,700 archaeological sites, most of which are newly uncovered, Nineveh represents one of Iraq’s most significant yet vulnerable cultural regions. The cooperation with Spain, facilitated by the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage, could play a central role in stabilising and preserving these sites.

The Spanish delegation highlighted their enthusiasm for strengthened partnership between the nations, and for the expanded cooperation and specialised training programmes set to take place, to encourage local capacity and aid in returning Mosul to its rightful place on the global cultural map.
