Iraq and Greece Resume Flights, Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Fouad Hussein, met with his Greek counterpart, Giorgos Gerapetritis, in Baghdad on 30 October 2025, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in multiple sectors.

During the meeting, the ministers highlighted the historical ties between Iraq and Greece and agreed on new avenues for collaboration, including trade, investment, education, water management, and the medical and pharmaceutical sectors. Mr. Gerapetritis extended an invitation to Mr. Hussein to participate in the upcoming Forum of Ancient Civilizations in Greece, aimed at promoting cultural and historical dialogue.

A major outcome of the visit is the resumption of direct flights between Athens and Baghdad, scheduled to begin in December 2025. The ministers emphasised that this initiative will facilitate travel, enhance tourism, and strengthen economic and social exchanges between the two nations.

Following the bilateral session, the ministers held a joint press conference in Baghdad, where Mr. Hussein highlighted Iraq’s commitment to diversifying its economy, expanding international partnerships, and promoting sustainable development.
