Iraq is moving forward with plans to expand the use of solar power and smart meters in Baghdad, following a meeting held on Wednesday to review investment opportunities and renewable energy projects across the capital’s districts and subdistricts.
During the session, officials reviewed studies identifying the most suitable areas in Baghdad for solar power generation, based on annual sunlight levels. Discussions also covered investment mechanisms, expected production capacities, payment collection systems, and land allocation needed for medium-scale solar projects.
The government noted that areas on the outskirts of Baghdad currently consume up to 35% of the province’s electricity supply. Medium-scale solar networks combined with smart meters are being considered as a key solution to ease pressure on the grid and improve service reliability.
Officials also examined progress on a major solar energy project expected to generate around 750 megawatts per day. Relevant ministries were directed to begin preparing land allocations immediately, with the goal of having new solar stations ready to contribute power by next summer.
