Iran, Iraq Strengthen Tourism Ties with Ambitious Visitor Goal

In a diplomatic move, Iran and Iraq have agreed to boost tourist exchanges to 10 million visitors in the coming years, following previous discussions between their tourism ministers on the sidelines on the 26th UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Both ministers pledged to establish a joint technical committee for tourism, in addition to seeking UNESCO World Heritage recognition for the ‘Arbaeen’ procession – a significant event in the Shia Muslim calendar.

Over 3.5 million Iranians visited Iraq last year, whilst nearly 3 million Iraqis visited Iran. Their 10 million goal will require improved transport links, accommodation and private sector engagement.

The agreement marks a new phase in regional diplomacy.
